Potholes

Small bowl-shaped depressions on the surface of asphalt pavements which go deep down to the base are called potholes. These are very sharp and will enlarge with water intrusion and stagnation. Vehicles encounter severe damage due to the depth of potholes and also the sharp edges. Even the pedestrians may to trip over them.

The water and debris must be removed and the vertical edges must be squared and then must be patched up with patching material and compacted.

Raveling

The wearing away of pavement by the loss of rocks and asphalt is called raveling. Due to this, the thickness of the pavement decreases and loose gravel damages the asphalt. Water seeps in to small holes formed by the gravel particles on the asphalt. As a result, an uneven surface will be formed which may cause trips. The stagnant water also causes slips.

If the raveling involves a small area, asphalt patching can be done. If it involves a large area, then the whole damaged pavement must be removed and new pavement must be laid.

Depressions

Low areas of pavement which do not penetrate the asphalt caused by poor compaction are called depressions. If left unfixed, these may even damage the asphalt surface and as a result water and debris may be collected in these depressions. Overtime, the asphalt surfaces may become fully damaged.

Simple asphalt patches or full-depth patches can be applied to fill the depressions.

Cracking:

Alligator cracking is caused due to weak base or sub-grade and overload. Many cracks interconnect with each other and cause pieces of asphalt pavements to detatch from the pavement. The cracks in asphalt pavements that occur longitudinally are called longitudinal cracks. They are caused due to weak joints and shrinking or expansion of the asphalt. The cracks that occur at the edges of driveways and parking when heavy loaded vehicles are driven at the edges are called edge cracks. Lack of support, poor drainage, poor quality base, and shrinkage are the causes of edge cracks. If left unresolved, this problem may occur in the center of the roads which will cause great disturbance to the vehicles passing by.

Crack sealant should be used to fill smaller cracks and large ones should be patched. Sometimes, the asphalt base must be strengthened and damaged pieces must be cleared and new sub-base and asphalt surface must be constructed.

ASPHALT UPHEAVAL

The upward movement of asphalt pavements caused by swelling of the sub-grade due to freezing or moisture is called asphalt upheaval.

The affected area must be removed and a full depth asphalt patching must be done.
